Tropical Storm Debby Update and Important Information

Update #5

5:00 p.m., August 6, 2024

The City of Isle of Palms is under a State of Emergency and has activated its Municipal Emergency Operations Center.

 

Weather Update:

  • Debby is currently emerging off Savannah, GA and slowly drifting into the water and it will be lingering over the water all day tomorrow. The storm is currently moving very slowly at 3mph. By Wednesday afternoon, the storm will start turning back to the SC Coast, making landfall between Awendaw, SC and Myrtle Beach, SC in the early hours on Thursday.
  • It appears that the largest portion of rainfall has moved north, but still anticipate rainfall to continue over the next few days, which could cause additional flooding. The highest probability of tropical storm force winds along the coast is for tomorrow evening.
  • Conditions should improve by Friday.

 

City Operations

  • Garbage collection has been cancelled for the rest of the week. Residents are asked to secure their garbage and recycling bins until service is restored after the storm.
  • Emergency sand scraping is taking place along 5 properties in the 200 block of Ocean Blvd that meet emergency conditions. One additional property met the 20’ emergency threshold today.
  • Waterway Blvd. at 24th Avenue, is still closed. SCDOT is clearing a downed tree.
  • The section of Palm Blvd between 31-33rd Avenue is still closed due to significant standing water on the road.
  • All other roads are now open.
  • City Administrative offices and the Recreation Center will be closed from Tuesday, August 6th for the duration of the storm.  
  • All meetings and events scheduled for this week have been cancelled and will be rescheduled for a later date.
  • Municipal Court scheduled for Wednesday, August 7th, will be rescheduled. All cases have been continued to September dates. Notices will be mailed to addresses on file. Any questions should be directed to Amy Lee, Clerk of Court at amyw@iop.net
  • Public Restrooms on Front Beach will be closed on Tuesday, August 6th for the duration of the storm.

 

Suggested Preparations

  • Residents are asked to hunker down and stay home.
  • Do not drive around barricades or through standing water.
  • Residents should continue to monitor local weather forecasts and prepare now.
  • Sign up to receive text alerts from the City through Sunnie, an AI Virtual Assistant, by texting “Hello” to 877-607-6467.
