Tropical Storm Debby Update and Important Information

The City of Isle of Palms is under a State of Emergency and has activated its Municipal Emergency Operations Center.
Tropical Storm Debby is bringing historic levels of rain and strong winds to the community.
Power Outages:
Dominion Energy anticipates power to be restored between 31st and 41st Avenue this afternoon.
2:40PM Update: power has been restored between 31st and 41st Ave and to Wild Dunes.
Weather Update:
- Charleston County is under a Tropical Storm Warning and Storm Surge Warning, and a Flood Warning
- Tropical Storm Debby’s track has shifted and now shows Isle of Palms as a potential landfall location.
- Tropical Storm Debby is moving at 6mph.
- Historic rainfall is expected along South Carolina with 10-20 inches, and 20-30 inches of rain along the coast.
- Rainfall reported since the start of the storm event – 12 inches. An additional 3-5 inches expected today.
- Predicted rainfall for Wednesday – 1-3 inches
- Predicted rainfall for Thursday – 2 – 4 inches
- With the shift in forecast, potential for stronger winds is high with sustained winds of 40-45 mph and 60 mph gusts. The storm center is anticipated to be over our area on Thursday, which will be the main concern for peak winds.
- Storm surge predicted at 2-4 feet.
- Latest forecasts shows the storm lingering over South Carolina through Friday.
- Rainfall is predicted to be historic and catastrophic.
City Operations:
- Public Works staff are actively clearing ditches, storm drains and pre-deploying pumps in flood prone areas.
- Garbage collection schedule has been cancelled for the week. Residents are asked to secure their garbage and recycling bins until service is restored after the storm.
Road Closures:
- 25th Avenue from Palm Blvd. through Waterway Blvd.
- Multiple downed trees caused by a tornado. Damaged a home and multiple vehicles. No injuries.
- Palm Blvd. between 31st at 33rd Ave. due to flooding
- Palm Blvd. between 28th and 30th due to flooding
- 35th Ave and Cameron
- Power lines down due to a transformer blown
- Hartnett Blvd at 25th due to damage caused by tornado
- Waterway Blvd between 23rd and 24th due to flooding
Closures:
- City Administrative offices and the Recreation Center will be closed from Tuesday, August 6th for the duration of the storm.
- All meetings and events scheduled for this week have been cancelled and will be rescheduled for a later date.
- Municipal Court scheduled for Wednesday, August 7th, will be rescheduled. All cases have been continued to September dates. Notices will be mailed to addresses on file. Any questions should be directed to Amy Lee, Clerk of Court at amyw@iop.net
- Public Restrooms on Front Beach will be closed on Tuesday, August 6th for the duration of the storm.
Suggested Preparations:
- Residents are asked to hunker down and stay home.
- Do not drive around barricades or through standing water.
- Residents should continue to monitor local weather forecasts and prepare now.
