I-526 Westbound Bridge Closure
Bridge Closure Situation
The James B. Edwards Bridge westbound Interstate 526 over the Wando River remains closed since Monday, May 14, 2018 afternoon after an inspection conducted by the South Carolina Department of Transportation found a broken cable. The eastbound side towards Isle of Palms remains open. Although the assessment was expected to last 48 hours, the SCDOT has not yet announced how long the westbound bridge will be closed for repairs.
What to Expect
Commuters should expect longer travel times and delays and are encouraged to allow for extra travel times. Also, Isle of Palms residents may experience delays in the yard debris, garbage and recycling collection services due to drivers having to take alternate routes.
What to do
Due to the closure of the westbound side of the bridge, westbound traffic has been diverted to Long Point Road, which leads to U.S. Highway 17. From there, drivers can either head southbound on Highway 17 toward Charleston and Interstate 26 or turn north to S.C. Highway 41, then to Clements Ferry Road, and then re-enter westbound I-526 near the fully functional Don Holt Bridge.
Cones were placed on the I-26 westbound ramp of the Ravenel Bridge, splitting the single lane into two in order to facilitate increased westbound travel off of the bridge. This modified traffic pattern will continue to be implemented during peak travel times until further notice.
