City Council Highlights - August 27, 2024

Isle of Palms City Council held its regular meeting on Tuesday, August 27, 2024, at Council Chambers in City Hall. Listed below are the highlights from the meeting:

Action Items

  • City Council received a presentation of CARTA’s FY25 Budget. The budget includes funding to continue the operation of the Beach Reach Shuttle that runs from Mount Pleasant’s Town Center to Front Beach every weekend between Memorial Day and Labor Day.
  • City Council approved a proposal from First Tryon Advisors for the development of a long-term capital planning model which will assist the city in prioritizing capital needs, forecasting future expenditures and revenues, allowing for better budgeting and financial management and enhancing fiscal sustainability.
  • City Council approved a five-year agreement with Coastal Science & Engineering for island wide monitoring and surveying. The city has enhanced its beach monitoring and surveying efforts by implementing a semi-annual schedule. This change marks an increase from prior years, when surveying was done once a year. By increasing the frequency of these assessments, city will have more timely data about beach conditions, enabling improved decision making for the community.
  • City Council approved the purchase of a mini excavator and skid steer for the city’s stormwater management team. The addition of this equipment will enhance our team’s ability to manage drainage infrastructure more efficiently, allowing for quicker and more effective maintenance.
  • City Council approved a contract to Icon Contracting for the construction of ADA compliant boardwalks at 46th and 52nd Avenue, including handicap parking. This project is part of the city’s continued effort at improving access to the beach for people with mobility-related disabilities.
  • City Council approved an allocation of $200,000 from the Beach Preservation Fee Fund for the installation of additional sandbags along Beachwood East, which is experiencing erosion. The city continues to pursue a permit for the construction of a shoal management project, which involves harvesting sand from an incoming shoal on the north end of the island.
