Issued May 7, 2010 - Numerous reports of persons going door-to-door on the island attempting to sell cleaning products on behalf of a company called "Sierra Solution" have been recieved in the past several days.  The Isle of Palms Police Department has responded to several locations and has issued tickets for conducting business without a license.  All those recieving tickets were from out of state and most had criminal records.  Residents should be extremely careful when dealing with persons coming to their door unannounced.  Please report any such activity to the police department by calling 911 or 843-886-6522 so an officer can determine if the business activity is legal.

Issued April 22, 2010 -  Thefts significantly increase during the summer months, so the Isle of Palms Police Department is launching its "Hide It, Lock It or Lose It” program to encourage crime prevention and to remind everyone to secure their homes, vehicles and valuables at all times. Communities that participate in such programs report a decrease in the number of thefts, credit card frauds and identity thefts. The Isle of Palms Police Department is committed to public safety. We wish you an enjoyable and safe summer. Please call 843-886-6522 with any questions or visit us at the Isle of Palms Public Safety Building at 30 J.C. Long Boulevard.

Hide It, Lock It or Lose It TIPS

  • Lock your car and house and take your keys with you, even for a short time.
  • Do not take your remote or keyless entry fob to the beach. If your keys are stolen, perpetrators can easily locate your vehicle.
  • Hide valuables in your trunk and out of sight, including spare change, CDs and cell phones.
  • Activate anti-theft devices.
  • Do not leave a key hidden on your vehicle. Criminals know where to look!
  • Do not leave items unattended on the beach, even for a short time.
  • Do not take items such as credit cards, checkbooks or social security cards to the beach.
  • Do not leave your bicycle unsecured or parked outside overnight. Secure the bicycle to a fixed object using multiple, case-hardened steel locks and cables.
  • Never leave children unattended, especially near or in the water.
  • Be mindful of your surroundings at all times.
  • Report any suspicious activity or persons immediately by calling 911.

Dogs are allowed on the beach. They may be off-leash from 5:00AM to 8:00AM from April 1 to September 14. Remove pet waste. Do not leave pets in vehicles.

Issued December 2, 2009 - On Tuesday, November 24, 2009, two black male subjects attempted to rob two people in the driveway of a home on Ocean Boulevard.  The attempt was not successful, and the subjects escaped in a waiting van.

Residents are urged to be aware of their surroundings and to contact the Isle of Palms Police Department regarding anything that appears to be out of the ordinary.

Issued November 10, 2009 - The Isle of Palms Police Department has identified a company selling magazines door-to-door, often using rude or pushy methods to get a commitment.  The company may also use the guise of entering homes for magazine sales to assess the homes for potential burglaries or to determine unoccupied homes.
If you see people going door-to-door, immediately contact the Police Department by calling 911 or 843-886-6522.  The Police Department will respond and determine if the people are representing a legitimate company and if they possess a valid business license.  Please do not hesitate to report this or any other type of suspicious activity that you observe.
